Our solution refines century-old Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology, which turns heat into electricity just as thermal energy powers a steam engine. We can harness heat from the ground, the sun, the air or biomass to generate energy. We refer to this combination of sustainable technologies and our ORC unit as our Smart Heat Utility Box (SHUBox). Enhanced Geothermal Systems access shallow heat renewed by deep heat sources as well as stored solar power from the sun. To ensure there is always enough energy to power our SHUBox, we test the soil composition and water table to measure heat conductivity and tailor the ground probe before an installation is considered.
Heat from renewable sources is harnessed to warm water to 50C via a heat pump - the same way a boiler heats water in a house. The hot water feeds a heat exchanger and brings it into contact with our proprietary fluid, which evaporates to steam at 50C. The fluid creates 250 times more steam than water, releasing much more energy. The steam moves a rotary motor and creates electricity. It's that simple.
This means we can capture low-temperature heat from shallow depths in the ground to build small-scale power plants almost anywhere, with the same technology commonly used to heat and cool buildings. Wind and solar farms are commonplace depending on the climate in different parts of the world. Get ready for a new age of heat farms. According to the UK Department of Energy, one SHUBox, which is a 100kW unit, will power about 40 homes. SHUBoxes can be grouped together to form a 1MW ‘Clean Power Station’ (CPS). More can be added to create geothermal heat farms up to 10MW. Electricity generated by heat farms can stand alone as microgrids or feed into the national grid, which guarantees lucrative tariffs for long periods in some countries.
